Reading second gifts after a festival appeal
Why first-gift spikes after festive campaigns can hide a quieter problem in the following sixty days.
Festival appeals often produce a bright first-gift week. The harder question is what happens next: do those supporters return within sixty days, or does the app go quiet until the next celebration?
When we review donor-app exports for Malaysian nonprofits, we separate first-time festival givers from people who already gave earlier in the year. The second group usually needs a different receipt tone and a shorter path back to a follow-up gift. The first group needs stewardship that does not assume they know your programmes.
A practical check: list every first gift tied to the festival tag, then mark who completed any second gift before day sixty. If the share is thin, look at confirmation screens, receipt timing, and whether your thank-you call list ever included that cohort.
Boards sometimes ask for a single retention percentage. Offer them the festival cohort table instead — it tells a truer story of how celebration energy converts into ongoing support.
